Metro 2012 is a project aimed at to providing increased electrical infrastructure capacity, to meet a significant increase in energy demand in Melbourne's North East Central Business District. Metro 2012 will increase capacity to 165MVA within the key city based zone substation network to meet the demand initiated by residential and commercial growth.
The CBD Security of Supply project is a separate initiative, which will increase the level of supply security at CitiPower's 66kV network level across the Central Business District, to meet the increased expectation of a non-interruptible electricity supply for this region. The CBD Security of Supply project will provide Double back-up” – ‘N-1 Secure’ which is the ability to switch the Network within 30 minutes of a High Voltage outage, to withstand a second High Voltage outage.
The works include electricity terminal and substation upgrades at three key locations: Carlton (BQ) Victoria Market (VM) and China Town (W). Electricity substation works include the installation of approximately 13 km of new 66kV Underground cables over a 7km distance from Brunswick to Carlton to the inner CBD
Around 20-30 metres of open trench will be temporarily re-instated each day prior to peak traffic. and traffic management will be in place for cranage periods and loading and unloading of equipment.
