Extreme Weather and Power Supplies

28 January 2009

CitiPower and Powercor is committed to taking all reasonable steps to meet peak electricity demand this summer and has invested millions of dollars in preparing its electricity networks for extreme weather conditions.

These measures are designed to minimise the occurrence and impact of distribution related network failures during summer, and include:

  • Electrical load testing and system upgrades in areas likely to need extra electrical capacity
  • Comprehensive vegetation management programs to ensure trees are not growing close to power lines
  • Using our Contact Centre, website and local radio to keep customers up-to-date during emergencies
  • Implementing call centre technology improvements to improve access to current fault information.

Customers should note that under Total Fire Ban conditions, certain automatic network contols are supressed to mitigate bushfire risks. Manual inspections are often necessary after supply interruptions, which can cause short restoration delays in certains parts of the State.

In the event of a widespread supply interruption, tune into your local ABC radio or ACE radio stations for updates. For isolated supply faults or difficulties, contact 13 24 12 within the Powercor region or 13 12 80 within the CitiPower region.
